Commercial Fire Door Requirements

When considering a fire door: »

Determine if the door is for a Commercial or Residential application. • For Residential applications, please refer to the “Light Commercial” section. » Verify the appropriate building code(s). » Determine if a Fire Label is required as determined by local building code(s). Basic Fire Door Requirements:

1. Must be self-closing. 2. Must be self-latching. 3. Must have a Label attached. 4. Door Frame must have an attached or embossed Label.

10. Fire Doors with Safe-Wire glass Lite kits a. The glass frame and glazing bead must be metal. b. The glass must be Safe-Wire not less then 1/4” thick. c. Maximum glass size allowed: • 20 Minute = 1296 sq. in. per lite • 45 Minute = 1296 sq. in. per lite (E label) • 45 Minute = 1296 sq. in. per lite (C label) • 60 Minute = 100 sq. in. per lite (B label) • 90 Minute = 100 sq. in. per lite (B label) • 90 Minute = No glass permitted (D label) • 3 Hour = No glass permitted (A label) 11. A Fire Door with a Louver requires a Fusible Link Louver. 12. N o Louvers allowed with 20 Minute Doors (typically Smoke doors). 13. No Louvers allowed in fire-rated doors with lite kits. 14. No Louvers allowed in doors with Panic Exit Hardware or Stairwells. 15. Maximum Fire-Rated louver size is 24x24.

5. Must have Steel Bearing Hinges. 6. Must have “Listed” Hardware.

7. If a Fire Door is held open, it must have a “UL-listed”, heat fusible link or smoke detection device (or be tied into the fire alarm system). 8. P airs of Fire Doors with astragals that require overlapping astragals should use a coordinator or open back strike for proper closing. 9. P airs of Fire Doors required to meet Egress shall not be equipped with an astragal that inhibits the free use of either leaf.

Wall Rating Door and Frame Rating

These openings are in walls that separate building or divide a single building into designated fire areas.

4 Hour

3 Hour (180 Minutes)

Openings of this type are used in enclosures of vertical communication or egress through buildings. Examples of these types of openings include stairwells and elevator shafts. These door and frame assemblies divide occupancies in a building.

2 Hour

1-1/2 Hour (90 Minutes)

1 Hour

1 Hour (60 Minutes)

For use where there are openings in corridors or room partitions.

3/4 Hour (45 Minutes)

This opening is in a wall where there is the potential for severe fire exposure from the exterior of the building.

2 Hour

1-1/2 Hour (90 Minutes)

This opening is an exterior wall that has the potential for moderate to light fire exposure from the exterior of the building.

3/4 Hour (45 Minutes)

These openings are in corridors where smoke and draft control is required. The minimum wall rating is 1 hour.
