Standard Wood Joinery The Risks of Moisture

GOOD DURABILITY

Standard construction wood doors are made with a veneer over a finger-jointed core. This makes them susceptible to moisture damage, especially in partially or unprotected doorways.

The stile and rail joints are joined by dowel pins, but the glue is only applied at the dowels. This means that water can seep into the coped area, which is not sealed by the glue. Once water begins to seep in, it can lead to moisture infiltration, door swelling, and eventually rot and decay. If you live in an area with high moisture levels, or if your home is exposed to extreme weather conditions, standard wood doors are not the best choice.
